Tone in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 50 people named Tone in Ireland; roughly one in every 88,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 25 men and 25 women.

The Tones were heavily concentrated in Westmeath, home to 62% of them (31 people). Next came Kilkenny (6), Tipperary (4), Dublin (2) and Longford (2).

The average Tone in 1911 was 33.8 years old, 30.6 for men and 37.1 for women; noticeably older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Tone literacy in 1911
Of the Tones whose literacy was recorded, 72% could both read and write, 2% could read but not write, and 26% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 84% reading and writing against 60% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Tone common first names
The most common male names were John (6), William, James, Francis and Patrick. For women it was Mary (5), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Agnes and Anne.
Tone occupations in 1911
The most common occupation among Tones was farmer, 18% of them (9 people). Next came general labourer (14%), scholar / student (14%), domestic servant (8%) and plasterer / slater / thatcher (8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 20% of all Tones, followed by general labourers, domestic service and building & construction.
What religion is Tone?
Tones were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 96% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (4%).
