The 1911 Census recorded 1,668 people named Toner in Ireland, about 0.038% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 523rd most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 815 men and 852 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)
Counties and map with Toner in Ireland
Armagh had the largest share of Toners, 21.3% (355 people). Next came Antrim (308), Derry (244), Tyrone (212) and Donegal (136).
Toner average age in 1911
The average Toner in 1911 was 28.8 years old, 28.0 for men and 29.6 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Toner literacy in 1911
Of the Toners whose literacy was recorded, 74.1% could both read and write, 5.7% could read but not write, and 20.2% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 75.2% reading and writing against 73% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Toner common first names
The most common male names were John (103), James, Patrick, Joseph and Michael. For women it was Mary (110), followed by Bridget, Annie, Elizabeth and Margaret.
Toner occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Toner's census form was "Scholar"; 20.2% (337) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (13.4%), textile worker (5.8%), general labourer (5%) and farm labourer (3.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 17.5% of all Toners, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.
What religion is Toner?
Toners were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 94.7% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (3.9%), Methodist (0.9%) and Presbyterian (0.1%).
