The 1911 Census recorded 185 people named Toohey in Ireland; roughly one in every 24,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 84 men and 100 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

The Tooheys were heavily concentrated in Tipperary, home to 61.1% of them (113 people). Next came Offaly (34), Limerick (10), Cork (9) and Galway (4).

The average Toohey in 1911 was 35.0 years old, 36.1 for men and 34.0 for women; noticeably older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Toohey literacy in 1911
Of the Tooheys whose literacy was recorded, 76.6% could both read and write, 6.3% could read but not write, and 17.1% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 79.5% reading and writing against 74.2% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were Michael (14), John, James, Patrick and William. For women it was Mary (23), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Anne and Catherine.

The most common entry on a Toohey's census form was "Scholar"; 16.2% (30) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (10.3%), farm labourer (8.6%), general labourer (5.4%) and domestic servant (4.3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 18.9% of all Tooheys, followed by domestic service, general labourers and retail & commerce.
What religion is Toohey?
Tooheys were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 95.7% of them. The remainder were mostly Jewish (3.2%) and Anglican (0.5%).
