The 1911 Census recorded 233 people named Toolan in Ireland; roughly one in every 19,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 124 men and 109 women.

The Toolans were heavily concentrated in Roscommon, home to 50.2% of them (117 people). Next came Sligo (36), Mayo (34), Antrim (18) and Limerick (9).

The average Toolan in 1911 was 29.4 years old, 28.7 for men and 30.3 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Toolan literacy in 1911
Of the Toolans whose literacy was recorded, 76% could both read and write, 5.4% could read but not write, and 18.6% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Toolan common first names
The most common male names were John (16), Michael, Patrick, James and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (16), followed by Bridget, Kate, Anne and Catherine.

The most common occupation among Toolans was farmer, 25.3% of them (59 people). Next came scholar / student (25.3%), farm labourer (3.4%), textile worker (2.6%) and general labourer (1.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 29.2% of all Toolans, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and retail & commerce.
