That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Toolis literacy in 1911
Of the Toolises whose literacy was recorded, 57.4% could both read and write, 7.4% could read but not write, and 35.3% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 60% reading and writing against 55.3% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (7), Michael, Martin, Thomas and Edward. For women it was Mary (8), followed by Bridget, Anne, Maggie and Margaret.

The most common entry on a Toolis's census form was "Scholar"; 30.9% (21) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (16.2%), cook (2.9%), general labourer (2.9%) and post office worker (1.5%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 16.2% of all Toolises, followed by domestic service, general labourers and public service & defence.
