Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 15.1% of all Topleys, followed by agriculture, transport and general labourers.

Most Topleys, 68.5%, were Anglican. The remainder were mostly Methodist (11%), Roman Catholic (11%), Presbyterian (5.5%) and Congregationalist (2.7%).
