Of the Tottens whose literacy was recorded, 72.8% could both read and write, 3.8% could read but not write, and 23.5% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 74.1% reading and writing against 71.3% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were William (15), Joseph, James, John and Thomas. For women it was Elizabeth (10), followed by Sarah, Martha, Margaret and Mary.

The most common entry on a Totten's census form was "Scholar"; 18.5% (41) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were general labourer (10.4%), textile worker (9.5%), farm labourer (5%) and farmer (4.1%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 13.5% of all Tottens, followed by general labourers, agriculture and manufacturing & trades.

Tottens were predominantly Anglican (71.2%). The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (13.5%), Methodist (5.9%), Roman Catholic (4.5%) and Plymouth Brethren (2.7%).
