The 1911 Census recorded 64 people named Tumulty in Ireland; roughly one in every 69,000 people carried the name. There were noticeably more women than men recorded: 36 women to 28 men.

The average Tumulty in 1911 was 30.7 years old, 32.4 for men and 29.4 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Tumulty literacy in 1911
Of the Tumultys whose literacy was recorded, 80.6% could both read and write, 8.1% could read but not write, and 11.3% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (7), Patrick, John, Peter and Thomas. For women it was Mary (5), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Anne and Kate.
Tumulty occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Tumulty's census form was "Scholar"; 23.4% (15) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (17.2%), farm labourer (4.7%), textile worker (4.7%) and domestic servant (3.1%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 21.9% of all Tumultys, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and general labourers.
What religion is Tumulty?
Tumultys were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 93.8% of them. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (4.7%) and Anglican (1.6%).
