The 1911 Census recorded 246 people named Tunney in Ireland; roughly one in every 18,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 119 men and 127 women.

The Tunneys were heavily concentrated in Mayo, home to 62.6% of them (154 people). Next came Donegal (41), Dublin (21), Cork (9) and Leitrim (8).

The average Tunney in 1911 was 28.8 years old, 28.6 for men and 29.1 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Tunney literacy in 1911
Of the Tunneys whose literacy was recorded, 80.6% could both read and write, 3.7% could read but not write, and 15.7% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 83.6% reading and writing against 77.8% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Tunney common first names
The most common male names were James (16), Thomas, Michael, Patrick and John; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (19), followed by Bridget, Anne, Catherine and Annie.
Tunney occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Tunney's census form was "Scholar"; 23.2% (57) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (22.8%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (3.7%), clergy / religious (1.2%) and domestic servant (1.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 23.2% of all Tunneys, followed by retail & commerce, professional and domestic service.
