The 1911 Census recorded 623 people named Turkington in Ireland; roughly one in every 7,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 306 men and 317 women.

The Turkingtons were heavily concentrated in Armagh, home to 54.3% of them (338 people). Next came Antrim (149), Down (62), Tyrone (49) and Cork (8).

The average Turkington in 1911 was 26.2 years old, 26.3 for men and 26.2 for women; noticeably younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Turkington literacy in 1911
Of the Turkingtons whose literacy was recorded, 77.6% could both read and write, 6% could read but not write, and 16.4% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (23), John, Robert, William and Thomas. For women it was Mary (18), followed by Sarah, Elizabeth, Annie and Margaret.

The most common entry on a Turkington's census form was "Scholar"; 25.8% (161) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (11.9%), textile worker (9.5%), general labourer (4.3%) and farm labourer (2.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 14.8% of all Turkingtons, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and retail & commerce.
What religion is Turkington?
Turkingtons were predominantly Anglican (72.1%). The remainder were mostly Methodist (9.3%), Presbyterian (7.5%), Roman Catholic (4%) and Baptist (1.4%).
