That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Of the Tyndalls whose literacy was recorded, 88.8% could both read and write, 1.3% could read but not write, and 9.8% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 91.3% reading and writing against 86.7% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common entry on a Tyndall's census form was "Scholar"; 20% (47) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were general labourer (6.8%), farmer (4.7%), clerk / office worker (2.6%) and no occupation / dependent (2.6%). Grouped by sector, general labourers accounted for 6.8% of all Tyndalls, followed by agriculture, textiles & clothing and domestic service.
What religion is Tyndall?
Most Tyndalls, 56.2%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (38.7%) and Methodist (4.7%).
