Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 9.1% of all Uptons, followed by agriculture, retail & commerce and transport.

Most Uptons, 64.5%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (25.3%), Presbyterian (6.5%) and Congregationalist (3.2%).
