Women came out slightly ahead, 84.6% reading and writing against 78.8% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (13), Patrick, William, James and Thomas. For women it was Mary (14), followed by Elizabeth, Lizzie, Margaret and Catherine.

The most common entry on an Usher's census form was "Scholar"; 21.7% (48) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (10%), farm labourer (4.1%), clerk / office worker (3.2%) and domestic servant (3.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 15.8% of all Ushers, followed by domestic service, clerical & administration and general labourers.
What religion is Usher?
Most Ushers, 50.7%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (40.7%), Presbyterian (3.6%), Protestant (2.7%) and Congregationalist (0.5%).
