The most common male names were William (39), James, John, Robert and Samuel. For women it was Mary (32), followed by Elizabeth, Annie, Jane and Sarah.

The most common entry on a Vance's census form was "Scholar"; 20.8% (160) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (10.5%), textile worker (4.7%), general labourer (4.4%) and carter / driver / groom (1.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 13% of all Vances, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and transport.
What religion is Vance?
The largest religious group among Vances was Presbyterian, at 43.6%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (35.6%), Methodist (8.2%), Roman Catholic (7.8%) and Plymouth Brethren (1.6%).
