Men came out slightly ahead, 93.1% reading and writing against 83.3% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (16.7%), farm labourer (3.3%), retired / pensioner (3.3%) and general labourer (1.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 20% of all Verekers, followed by retail & commerce, retired & pensioners and general labourers.
What religion is Vereker?
Verekers were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 90% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (10%).
