That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common entry on a Waite's census form was "Scholar"; 21.2% (18) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were textile worker (7.1%), general labourer (4.7%), housekeeper (4.7%) and metal worker / engineer (4.7%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 9.4% of all Waites, followed by domestic service, manufacturing & trades and agriculture.
What religion is Waite?
Most Waites, 68.2%, were Anglican. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (14.1%), Methodist (9.4%), Presbyterian (7.1%) and Quaker (1.2%).
