Derry was Walls country: 43.3% of them (192 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Antrim (65), Down (46), Tyrone (46) and Sligo (20).

That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Of the Wallses whose literacy was recorded, 76% could both read and write, 4.4% could read but not write, and 19.5% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (31), James, Henry, Patrick and Thomas. For women it was Mary (23), followed by Elizabeth, Sarah, Susan and Catherine.

The most common entry on a Walls's census form was "Scholar"; 16.9% (75) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (14.4%), farm labourer (5.9%), general labourer (4.7%) and textile worker (4.1%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 20.3% of all Wallses, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.
What religion is Walls?
Wallses were predominantly Roman Catholic (75.6%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (11.1%), Presbyterian (9.7%), Protestant (1.6%) and Methodist (0.2%).
