Men came out slightly ahead, 78.3% reading and writing against 73.8% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (63), James, Thomas, Patrick and William. For women it was Mary (68), followed by Catherine, Bridget, Annie and Elizabeth.

The most common entry on a Watters's census form was "Scholar"; 19% (221) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (10.9%), textile worker (5.3%), general labourer (5%) and domestic servant (3.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 14.3% of all Watterses, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.

Most Watterses, 55.9%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (21%), Presbyterian (19.5%), Baptist (0.8%) and Non-Conformist (0.5%).
