The 1911 Census recorded 428 people named Wells in Ireland; roughly one in every 10,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 209 men and 216 women. (A small number, 3, had no sex recorded.)

That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Wells literacy in 1911
Of the Wellses whose literacy was recorded, 79.1% could both read and write, 4.6% could read but not write, and 16.3% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 81% reading and writing against 77.1% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (21), James, William, Thomas and Samuel. For women it was Mary (18), followed by Margaret, Elizabeth, Agnes and Alice.
Wells occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Wells's census form was "Scholar"; 19.9% (85) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were textile worker (10.5%), farmer (6.1%), general labourer (3%) and domestic servant (2.8%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 12.9% of all Wellses, followed by agriculture, domestic service and general labourers.
What religion is Wells?
The largest religious group among Wellses was Anglican, at 47.4%. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (24.8%), Presbyterian (14.5%), Methodist (11.4%) and Plymouth Brethren (0.2%).
