West in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 905 people named West in Ireland; roughly one in every 4,900 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 427 men and 475 women. (A small number, 3, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with West in Ireland
Dublin had the largest share of Wests, 21% (190 people). Next came Fermanagh (104), Antrim (94), Down (75) and Cork (73).
West average age in 1911
The average West in 1911 was 29.5 years old, 28.2 for men and 30.7 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
West literacy in 1911
Of the Wests whose literacy was recorded, 84% could both read and write, 2.8% could read but not write, and 13% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
West common first names
The most common male names were John (52), William, James, Thomas and George. For women it was Mary (40), followed by Elizabeth, Sarah, Margaret and Annie.
West occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a West's census form was "Scholar"; 22.8% (206) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (9.1%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (4%), general labourer (3.8%) and domestic servant (2.5%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 11.7% of all Wests, followed by retail & commerce, domestic service and textiles & clothing.
What religion is West?
Most Wests, 57.5%, were Anglican. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (25.9%), Presbyterian (8.1%), Methodist (4.2%) and Non-Conformist (0.4%).
