Of the Wheelans whose literacy was recorded, 84.2% could both read and write, 5.3% could read but not write, and 10.5% could do neither. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were Patrick (4), Thomas, Edward, George and Gregory. For women it was Annie (3), followed by Mary, Bridget, Ellen and Jane.

The most common entry on a Wheelan's census form was "Scholar"; 25.4% (16) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were domestic servant (12.7%), farmer (11.1%), general labourer (3.2%) and maid (3.2%). Grouped by sector, domestic service accounted for 17.5% of all Wheelans, followed by agriculture, building & construction and general labourers.
What religion is Wheelan?
Wheelans were predominantly Roman Catholic (71.4%). The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (19%) and Anglican (3.2%).
