The Wheltons were heavily concentrated in Cork, home to 96.5% of them (276 people). Next came Kerry (6), Dublin (3) and Wexford (1).

That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Of the Wheltons whose literacy was recorded, 72.3% could both read and write, 2.5% could read but not write, and 25.3% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 73.7% reading and writing against 70.5% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (25), Patrick, Michael, William and James. For women it was Mary (23), followed by Ellen, Catherine, Hannah and Annie.

The most common entry on a Whelton's census form was "Scholar"; 23.1% (66) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (19.6%), farm labourer (8.4%), domestic servant (4.9%) and general labourer (3.5%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 28% of all Wheltons, followed by domestic service, general labourers and fishing.
What religion is Whelton?
Wheltons were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 99.7% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (0.3%).
