Men came out slightly ahead, 85.5% reading and writing against 80.3% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common entry on a Whitney's census form was "Scholar"; 22.7% (65) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (15%), general labourer (2.8%), farm labourer (2.4%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (2.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 18.2% of all Whitneys, followed by domestic service, retail & commerce and general labourers.

Most Whitneys, 69.6%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (29.4%) and Presbyterian (0.3%).
