The 1911 Census recorded 198 people named Wilton in Ireland; roughly one in every 22,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 92 men and 104 women. (A small number, 2, had no sex recorded.)

That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Of the Wiltons whose literacy was recorded, 79.2% could both read and write, 4.2% could read but not write, and 16.7% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 83.3% reading and writing against 75.5% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were David (12), James, William, George and John. For women it was Mary (11), followed by Lizzie, Jane, Annie and Ellen.

The most common entry on a Wilton's census form was "Scholar"; 27.3% (54) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (9.6%), metal worker / engineer (3.5%), general labourer (3%) and textile worker (3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 11.6% of all Wiltons, followed by textiles & clothing, metal & engineering and domestic service.
What religion is Wilton?
Wiltons were predominantly Anglican (77.8%). The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (9.1%), Roman Catholic (6.6%) and Methodist (5.6%).
