Winter in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 292 people named Winter in Ireland; roughly one in every 15,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 131 men and 160 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Winter in Ireland
Down had the largest share of Winters, 16.1% (47 people). Next came Antrim (44), Cork (37), Waterford (37) and Armagh (31).
Winter average age in 1911
The average Winter in 1911 was 31.7 years old, 33.7 for men and 30.1 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Winter literacy in 1911
Of the Winters whose literacy was recorded, 82.7% could both read and write, 3.9% could read but not write, and 13.4% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 86.8% reading and writing against 79.4% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Winter common first names
The most common male names were John (17), William, James, Joseph and Robert. For women it was Margaret (14), followed by Mary, Catherine, Elizabeth and Ellen.
Winter occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Winter's census form was "Scholar"; 25.7% (75) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (10.3%), retired / pensioner (3.1%), domestic servant (2.7%) and general labourer (2.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 11.6% of all Winters, followed by domestic service, professional and retail & commerce.
What religion is Winter?
Most Winters, 53.4%, were Anglican. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (38.7%), Presbyterian (5.5%), Plymouth Brethren (1%) and Lutheran (0.3%).
