Of the Witherows whose literacy was recorded, 77.5% could both read and write, 4.5% could read but not write, and 18% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 81.8% reading and writing against 73.3% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were Alexander (5), John, Samuel, William and James. For women it was Margaret (11), followed by Bella, Annie, Isabella and Elizabeth.

The most common entry on a Witherow's census form was "Scholar"; 27.8% (25) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (24.4%), domestic servant (5.6%), farm labourer (4.4%) and seamstress (3.3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 28.9% of all Witherows, followed by domestic service, textiles & clothing and general labourers.
What religion is Witherow?
Witherows were overwhelmingly Presbyterian, 90% of them. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (8.9%) and Anglican (1.1%).
