Wren in 1911 Ireland
The 1911 Census recorded 340 people named Wren in Ireland; roughly one in every 13,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 172 men and 166 women. (A small number, 2, had no sex recorded.)

Kerry was Wren country: 42.9% of them (146 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Cork (76), Dublin (29), Limerick (27) and Down (18).
Wren average age in 1911
The average Wren in 1911 was 30.8 years old, 30.7 for men and 31.1 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Wren literacy in 1911
Of the Wrens whose literacy was recorded, 81.2% could both read and write, 2.1% could read but not write, and 16.7% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 82.6% reading and writing against 79.5% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Wren common first names
The most common male names were John (30), James, Patrick, Michael and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (35), followed by Ellen, Margaret, Johanna and Julia.
Wren occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Wren's census form was "Scholar"; 21.2% (72) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (17.9%), farm labourer (4.7%), domestic servant (2.9%) and other maker / factory worker (2.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 22.9% of all Wrens, followed by retail & commerce, domestic service and manufacturing & trades.
What religion is Wren?
Wrens were predominantly Roman Catholic (87.1%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (9.7%) and Presbyterian (0.6%).
