The average York in 1911 was 27.5 years old, 29.7 for men and 25.2 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
York literacy in 1911
Of the Yorks whose literacy was recorded, 79.2% could both read and write, 4.2% could read but not write, and 16.7% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 80.6% reading and writing against 77.8% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
York common first names
The most common male names were James (4), Patrick, William, Robert and Edward. For women it was Emma (3), followed by Margaret, Sarah, Agnes and Annabella.
York occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a York's census form was "Scholar"; 20.5% (15) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were general labourer (9.6%), farmer (6.8%), domestic servant (4.1%) and railway / tram worker (2.7%). Grouped by sector, general labourers accounted for 9.6% of all Yorks, followed by agriculture, domestic service and professional.
What religion is York?
The largest religious group among Yorks was Presbyterian, at 39.7%. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (27.4%), Anglican (26%), Methodist (5.5%) and Salvation Army (1.4%).
