On the southern bank of the Black River in County Galway, a spring-fed pool sits in open grassland with a quiet claim attached to it: local tradition holds that it never dries up.
The pool itself is oval, measuring roughly eight metres on its longer axis and five on its shorter, and the water simply keeps coming, apparently indifferent to season or drought. About twenty metres to the northeast, a second, smaller hollow sits in the ground like a companion piece. Known locally as the small well, it is circular, around three and a half metres across, and serves as a domestic well for the area, though it was dry when surveyors visited.
