No bank, no ditch, no hollow in the turf betrays its presence. The only reason we know it exists at all is a mark on a map drawn in 1838, when the Ordnance Survey produced its first detailed six-inch series of Ireland, capturing the outlines of earthworks and field boundaries that were still legible at the time but have since vanished beneath the soil.

The enclosure was situated on level ground near the western bank of a stream, in what was once a marshy area. Circular enclosures of this kind are a common feature of the Irish archaeological landscape, ranging from prehistoric hillforts to early medieval ringforts, the latter being the defended farmsteads that once dotted the countryside in their tens of thousands. Whether this particular example belongs to one tradition or another is unclear. What the 1838 surveyors recorded has since been swallowed up, possibly by drainage work that transformed the marshy ground around it, possibly simply by centuries of ploughing and settlement pressing the earthworks flat. The site now exists as a kind of cartographic ghost, present on paper and absent in the field.

There is little a visitor could usefully seek out here. The enclosure is not visible at ground level, and the surrounding landscape gives no obvious indication of what lies beneath. Its interest is perhaps less in what can be seen and more in what the 1838 map represents: a moment of recording that preserved the outline of something already fading, long before anyone thought to protect it.
