Pit, Coolbeg, Co. Wicklow

Road schemes across Ireland have a habit of turning up the unexpected, and the N11 improvement works in County Wicklow were no exception, though what emerged at Coolbeg was modest rather than monumental.

During groundwork on the N11 corridor, archaeologist Goorik Dehaene recorded a pit, a simple rounded cut in the ground with a single fill of material inside it. That description may sound unremarkable, but isolated pits of this kind are quietly common finds in Irish archaeology and can be frustratingly difficult to interpret without accompanying artefacts or organic material that might indicate their purpose or period.
