Old Decoy, Ballyline, Co. Kilkenny

At Ballyline in County Kilkenny, a field holds the ghost of an elaborate trap.

What is now ordinary agricultural land was once a duck decoy, a feature of estate life that has left almost no trace above ground. A duck decoy, in this context, is not a carved wooden lure but an engineered pond with a series of arm-like channels, called pipes, curving away from the central water and narrowing as they go, each one covered with netting. Wildfowl were coaxed along these channels by trained dogs and, sometimes, by the natural curiosity birds show towards movement, until they could be netted and caught. The system was efficient enough that such decoys supplied game to large households for generations.

The first edition Ordnance Survey six-inch map, surveyed in 1839, labels this site plainly as Old Decoy, suggesting that even by that date it was already considered a relic of an earlier practice. The pond itself measured roughly 240 metres north to south and 290 metres east to west. By the time the revised edition was produced in 1899 to 1900, the water had gone and the site had been reorganised into an octagonal field, with further field boundaries radiating outward from it. A stream ran around the perimeter from the north-west, east, and south-east, and the Munster River passes approximately 350 metres to the north before turning south. A house marked on both map editions, about 150 metres to the north of the decoy, is likely to have been the demesne house associated with the estate of which the decoy formed a part, though no trace of that demesne now survives. The octagonal field pattern, along with all the radiating boundaries visible on the revised map, has since been cleared away and the land reclaimed for agriculture. A rectangular tree plantation now occupies the northern portion of what was once the pond, quietly marking a boundary that no longer means what it once did.
