Metalworking
Just north of Callan in County Kilkenny lies an intriguing archaeological site where medieval industry once thrived.
About 40 metres north of the bailey (which itself sits east of the motte), archaeologists have identified what appears to be an ancient forge. This discovery came during comprehensive geophysical and topographical surveys conducted in 2002, which revealed several significant anomalies in the landscape.
The possible forge, approximately 5 metres wide, was identified alongside other industrial features including what experts believe to be a kiln situated about 20 metres to the southeast. Adding to the industrial character of this medieval complex, a millrace—a channel that directs water to power a mill—runs east to west just 9 metres north of the forge location. This millrace would have served the nearby watermill.
These findings paint a picture of a busy industrial area supporting the medieval settlement, with metalworking, possibly pottery production, and milling all taking place in close proximity to the defensive structures of the motte and bailey. The interpretative reconstruction plan developed by Clutterbuck, Elliot and Shanahan in 2006 helps visualise how these various elements would have functioned together as part of a cohesive medieval community centre.
