Cross, Newtown, Co. Kilkenny

Lying inside the ruined medieval church of Newtown Earley in County Kilkenny is a stone cross that spent an unknown length of time buried in the graveyard around it, only coming to light during a clean-up carried out between 1985 and 1987.

It is an unusual object even on first description: a three-armed cross, meaning it retains its two lateral arms and its shaft but has lost the top arm entirely, the uppermost fleur-de-lys terminal broken away. The shaft itself is fractured horizontally, so what survives is essentially two separate pieces, the upper portion measuring 0.75 metres in height and 0.50 metres wide, and the lower shaft fragment adding a further 0.7 metres. Together they give a sense of how substantial the original would have been.

The decorative detail is what makes it worth close attention. The surviving arm terminals are carved as fleur-de-lys, the three-pointed lily motif associated in medieval ecclesiastical art with purity and, frequently, with Marian devotion. At the centre of the cross-head sits a hollow lozenge, a recessed diamond shape that would once have caught light and shadow in a way a flat surface would not. Most intriguing of all is a mason's mark carved in the form of a flower. Such marks were a medieval craftsman's personal signature, used to identify individual work in large building or carving projects, often for the purposes of payment. Finding one on a cross fragment associates this piece not just with anonymous craft tradition but with a specific, if unnamed, hand. The cross is documented by R. Harte in the Old Kilkenny Review of 1987, where it appears as number 27 in a survey of tombstones at Newtown Earley, placing it within a broader picture of funerary stonework connected to the medieval church on the same site.
