Ringfort (Rath), Corragaun, Co. Kilkenny

In the townland of Corragaun in County Kilkenny, a ringfort sits in the landscape, largely unrecorded in the publicly available record.

That absence is itself a small curiosity. Ireland contains thousands of ringforts, known in Irish as raths, and this one has yet to have its details formally published. A rath is typically a circular enclosure defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches, built during the early medieval period, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries, and used as a farmstead and place of protection for a family and their livestock. They are among the most common archaeological monuments in the Irish countryside, yet each one carries a distinct local history.

Corragaun is a small rural townland, and without detailed excavation records or documentary sources in the public domain, the specific history of this particular enclosure remains largely opaque. What can be said is that ringforts of this type were the basic unit of rural settlement across early medieval Ireland, and their placement in the landscape was rarely accidental. Builders chose elevated ground where possible, or sites that offered natural drainage and clear sightlines. The earthen banks that define them were not purely defensive; they also served as boundaries marking family territory, enclosing animals, and signalling social status, with larger or more elaborately constructed examples generally associated with higher-ranking households. Whether this rath in Corragaun was a modest single-banked enclosure or something more substantial is not currently known from available sources.
