House – 17th century, Gardens, Co. Kilkenny

In County Kilkenny, a seventeenth-century house survives alongside the remains of its original gardens, a pairing that is rarer than it might first appear.

Formal gardens of that period were largely swept away across Ireland during the landscape fashions of the eighteenth century, when geometric layouts and walled enclosures gave way to rolling parkland. That any trace of a pre-Georgian garden arrangement should persist alongside a house of the same era makes this a combination worth noting, even if the details remain sparse.
