Ritual/Ceremonial
In a field in Wallslough, County Kilkenny, the ground holds a secret that is only legible from the air.
Two curving fosses, ancient ditches that once divided and defined a working landscape, are invisible at ground level but appear as cropmarks when seen from above. Cropmarks form when buried features affect the growth of crops or grass overhead; ditches retain moisture and produce lusher, darker vegetation, while buried walls or compacted surfaces do the opposite. The result is a ghostly map of human activity printed onto the surface of otherwise ordinary farmland.
