Architectural fragment, Leggetsrath, Co. Kilkenny

A sandstone pillar sitting in a government store in Kilkenny is not the most glamorous fate for a piece of medieval craftsmanship, yet the object itself rewards close attention.

The fragment, which came from Leggetsrath in County Kilkenny, measures just 0.67 metres in length and tapers slightly along its roughly square body. Its top is broken, and that breakage is part of what makes it interesting: the carving stops mid-design, hinting at a larger, more elaborate composition that no longer survives. The technique used is false relief, meaning the background is cut away so that the decorative elements appear to stand proud of the surface, even though the forms themselves are not deeply modelled. It is a method that requires a steady hand and a clear plan, and the evidence here suggests both.

The decoration is concentrated on two faces of the upper portion. One carries a plain recessed panel enclosed within a raised border, unadorned but precise. The other is considerably more lively: two raised triangles, each with a smaller triangular void cut into their centres, sit with their short bases resting on the lower edge of the panel. Above them, running along the dexter side (the right-hand side as the carving would originally have faced outward), is a raised rectangle whose centre has likewise been carved out. A horizontal fret border, the kind of repeating geometric ornament common in Romanesque and later medieval stonework, appears above this arrangement. Just where the stone fractures, the base of yet another motif is faintly visible, suggesting the design continued upward before the piece was damaged or broken from whatever larger structure it once belonged to. The pillar was almost certainly one component of a composite architectural element, perhaps a jamb, a screen, or a decorative surround, though the original context has not been established.
