No earthwork, no raised bank, no dip in the ground that might give the game away. The site belongs to a category of place that is defined almost entirely by its absence, known only through the paper trail left by maps and aerial cameras rather than anything a person walking the field today could point to.

A ringfort, sometimes called a rath, is typically a circular enclosure defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches, most commonly dating to the early medieval period in Ireland and used as a farmstead or family enclosure. This particular example was absent from the Ordnance Survey mapping of 1841 to 1842, which is itself noteworthy, since the OS work of that period was thorough enough to capture many far subtler features of the Irish landscape. The enclosure does appear on a later edition of the OS map, sitting in the corner of a field beside a small stream running eastward. By 1974, when the Geological Survey of Ireland flew aerial photography over the area, it was still visible from the air, the slight difference in soil moisture or crop growth that marks a buried feature showing up on film even when nothing registers at ground level. Since then, whatever trace remained has gone entirely. C. Toal documented the site in the North Kerry Archaeological Survey, published in 1995, by which point the surface evidence had already been lost.

What survives is essentially cartographic. The site exists in the gap between one map edition and the next, confirmed briefly by aerial photography before vanishing from sight altogether. It is the kind of place that asks something of the imagination rather than the eye.
