Field boundary, Coomacullen, Co. Kerry

In the valley of the Roughty River in County Kerry, a set of stone walls quietly vanishes into the bog.

They are not ruins in the dramatic sense; they are simply walls that kept going when the land swallowed them, their upper edges surfacing intermittently through rough pasture on the undulating moorland around Coomacullen, tracing the outline of fields that once meant someone, somewhere, was farming this ground seriously enough to move a great deal of stone.

The remains cover an area of roughly 120 metres by 100 metres, and what survives above the bog surface gives a reasonable sense of their original character. A typical surviving section runs about 15 metres in length, stands around 0.4 metres high, and is 0.6 metres thick; modest dimensions, but consistent with the curvilinear field walls found across many parts of early medieval and prehistoric Ireland, where boundaries followed the natural contours of the land rather than being imposed in straight lines. What makes this particular grouping more than just agricultural archaeology is the presence of two associated hut sites within the same network. One of them sits at the end of a wall section that extends to the north-east before disappearing into the bog; the other lies within the field system itself. Together they suggest not just managed land but a place where people lived and worked, now preserved largely because the bog grew over it and, in doing so, kept it.
