Some places are remarkable precisely because nothing remains of them.
At Derrymore in County Kerry, a sheepfold once recorded on the second edition of the Ordnance Survey maps has since vanished entirely, leaving no trace on the north bank of the Carhan river where it once stood. The site is now defined entirely by its absence, a gap between what was once carefully mapped and what the ground itself can show.
