Hut site, Killoe, Co. Kerry

On the south-eastern slopes of Bentee, in the rough upland pasture of the Iveragh Peninsula, a small drystone hut sits quietly beneath a covering of sod.

It measures only 3.6 metres by 2.5 metres, with walls roughly a metre thick and less than a metre high, built in a subrectangular plan from unmortered stone. Structures like this, sometimes called booley huts, were used by those who practised transhumance, the seasonal movement of livestock to higher ground in summer, though the precise function and date of this particular building remain unconfirmed. What gives the site an added layer of interest is what lies just uphill.

Eleven metres to the north, on a natural terrace, two structures sit joined together, their walls formed from contiguous upright stones set side by side rather than laid in courses. One of these, to the south, has an unusual triangular plan, measuring 6.3 metres by 3.5 metres. Triangular enclosures of this kind are uncommon in Irish archaeology, and their purpose is not always straightforward to interpret. The combination of the sod-covered hut below and the paired upright-stone structures above suggests a small complex of related activity, possibly connected to pastoral farming, though the relationship between the components and their relative ages is not established. The site was recorded as part of the comprehensive archaeological survey of south Kerry carried out by Aidan O'Sullivan and Jerry Sheehan, published by Cork University Press in 1996.

The site lies close to a modern track on the Bentee slopes, which makes it reasonably approachable for those already walking the area. The low profile of the hut means it could easily be passed without notice, its sod covering blending into the surrounding rough pasture. The upright-stone structures to the north, set on their terrace, are slightly more legible on the ground.
