Field boundary, An Corrán Buí, Co. Mayo

In the townland of An Corrán Buí in County Mayo, a field boundary sits quietly on the landscape, catalogued as an archaeological monument yet largely unknown beyond its entry in the official record.

Field boundaries of this kind are among the most easily overlooked features in the Irish countryside, easy to dismiss as the unremarkable work of farmers stacking stone to divide grazing land. But many such boundaries are far older than they appear, and in the west of Ireland in particular they can represent the fossilised outlines of land use stretching back centuries, sometimes millennia, their alignments unchanged since long before the Famine reorganised the rural landscape so dramatically.

The townland name itself carries some interest. An Corrán Buí translates roughly from Irish as the yellow crescent or sickle-shaped hollow, a topographic name of the kind that often describes a curve in a river, a bay, or a distinctive feature in the terrain. Mayo is a county whose landscape holds an extraordinary density of archaeological remains, from megalithic field systems preserved beneath the bogland at Céide Fields to the ring forts, cashels, and lazy beds that mark almost every hillside. A field boundary recorded as a monument in this context is unlikely to be simply a nineteenth-century farm wall; it is more probably a survival worth noting precisely because its age or configuration sets it apart from the ordinary.

Beyond its location in An Corrán Buí and its classification as a field boundary monument, the available detail on this particular site is thin. It is the kind of place that rewards careful attention on the ground rather than advance research at a desk.
