Burial, Aughinish, Co. Clare

In May 2019, human bone began emerging from the shoreline at Aughinish in County Clare, not through excavation but through erosion.

A low vertical face of earth, less than a metre high, had been steadily cut back by storm activity, and what it exposed were people, laid out in simple earth-dug graves beside the ruins of a small church. The sea, rather than any archaeologist, was doing the uncovering.

Inspection of the site revealed the partial remains of three individuals, all buried in the supine and extended position, that is, lying flat on their backs with limbs straight, and each with the head oriented to the west. This is the conventional posture of Christian burial, and the alignment appears deliberate, following the orientation of the ruined church beside which they lay. The first individual, closest to the church and possibly male, was represented by hip bones, a right thigh bone, and hand bones. A couple of metres further along, a second adult burial had been truncated by erosion across the thighs. A third was reduced to little more than the bones of a right hand. Most strikingly, two finger bones were found lodged in a wide masonry joint in the church gable itself, having been displaced and washed there by wave action. No grave goods were found with any of the burials, and no formal excavation was undertaken at the time. What is uncertain is how many other individuals may once have rested here. Comparative photographs taken between 2014 and 2019 show that roughly 0.6 metres of storm beach had been stripped away in that period alone, suggesting that some burials may already have been lost entirely to the water before anyone recorded them. A small quantity of bone was retained to allow radiocarbon dating should it be required in future.
