Ringfort (Rath), Lissatunny, Co. Tipperary

Between a garden and a ghost, the ringfort at Lissatunny in north Tipperary occupies an awkward middle ground.

It is still recognisably there, a circular enclosure roughly 26.7 metres across, but its earthen bank has been worn down to the point where it barely asserts itself above the surrounding ground. The interior is now used as a garden, the southern bank shows signs of burning, and refuse has been tipped against the western side. A concrete shed sits just outside the northern sector, where the bank has been levelled almost entirely flat.

Ringforts, sometimes called raths when they are earthen rather than stone-built, are among the most common archaeological monument types in Ireland. They were typically built during the early medieval period, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries, and functioned as enclosed farmsteads for single family groups. The enclosing bank and ditch provided both a degree of security and a clear demarcation of domestic space. Most Irish ringforts are modest in scale, and the Lissatunny example falls within that ordinary range. What is slightly unusual here is how thoroughly everyday use has eroded the site. Old trackways have clipped the eastern bank, and a modern track runs along the western and southern exterior. The enclosure sits on a gentle north-facing slope in undulating terrain, a setting that would have made reasonable agricultural sense to an early medieval family, though it offers little in the way of natural drama.

The condition of this particular site makes it a quietly instructive example of what happens to low-status earthworks when they are not protected or recognised as significant. The bank survives to an internal height of only 0.7 metres and an external height of around 0.5 metres, dimensions that would have been considerably more pronounced before centuries of agricultural activity, burning, and tipping took their toll. It is the kind of place that rewards a certain patience with understatement.
