Enclosure, Ballycullin, Co. Tipperary

Beneath the tree canopy in Ballycullin, County Tipperary, an oval earthwork sits largely unnoticed, its concentric rings of bank and ditch slowly being reclaimed by undergrowth.

What makes it quietly arresting is the sheer layering of effort fossilised in the ground: this is not a simple enclosure but a monument with multiple defensive or ceremonial lines built one beyond the other, the whole arrangement stretching roughly 35 metres across at its widest point.

The structure follows a plan common to Irish prehistoric and early medieval enclosures, though the specifics here are worth pausing over. An inner scarp, nearly four metres wide and rising to about a metre and a quarter in height, defines the core oval. Beyond it lies an intervening fosse, a broad flat-bottomed ditch roughly nine and a half metres wide and just over a metre deep, of the kind that would once have presented a serious obstacle. Further out still is an outer bank, its dimensions slightly more modest at five and a half metres wide, with an interior height and exterior height both close to a metre. Beyond even that, traces of a further external fosse survive, though only faintly, and only on the southern side. The causewayed entrance, a raised crossing that preserves an original gap across the ditch rather than a later break, faces north-north-east; earthen slippage over time has widened what was likely a six-metre gap to something closer to ten metres. The interior itself tilts gently downward toward the east-north-east, following the natural fall of the slope. The monument's survival in plan, if not in crisp relief, was confirmed by aerial photography in August 1996, which picked out its concentric geometry from above even where vegetation obscures the earthworks at ground level.
