Road – class 1 togher, Tullowmacjames, Co. Tipperary

Beneath the surface of a Tipperary bog, a Bronze Age road still exists, preserved in peat for roughly three thousand years.

Not a path worn into the earth, but a deliberately engineered structure, built from planks, transverse timber supports, brushwood, and roundwood, laid across waterlogged ground to allow people to cross it. A togher, as these bog roads are known in Irish archaeology, is essentially a causeway made of wood, constructed to make treacherous bogland passable. The one recorded at Tullowmacjames is modest in its surviving dimensions, thirty metres long, just over three metres wide, and less than twenty centimetres deep, but it is the kind of object that rewards a moment's thought: a practical piece of infrastructure, carefully made, used, and then lost to the bog for millennia.

A peatland survey carried out in 2006 by Archaeological Development Services identified the structure across three drain faces within the bog. The evidence at each point varied slightly in composition, but the surveyors concluded it most likely represented a single plank trackway, with the planks laid lengthways and supported underneath by transverse timbers. Radiocarbon dating placed the togher within the range of 1190 to 820 BC. More precisely, it may not be a standalone structure at all. The 2006 survey suggested it could represent the eastern end of a longer trackway recorded nearby, one that was dendrochronologically dated, that is, dated through the analysis of tree rings in the preserved timber, to 1033 plus or minus nine years BC. If that connection holds, both sections would form part of a single extensive bog road, though the relevant portion of the site is now heavily overgrown and no longer visible at the surface.
