Enclosure, Rossestown, Co. Tipperary

Beneath the soil of a south-west-facing slope in Rossestown, County Tipperary, there is a circular enclosure that nobody walking the land would ever know was there.

It exists, for now, only as a ghost in a photograph, a pale ring pressed into the crops and captured from the air in 1973. At ground level, nothing marks it out.

The site belongs to a category of archaeological discovery that owes everything to the aeroplane and the right conditions of light, drought, and season. A cropmark forms when buried features, old ditches, walls, or banks, affect the growth of whatever is planted above them. Soil that was once disturbed, whether dug out for a ditch or compacted by a wall foundation, retains moisture and nutrients differently from the surrounding ground, and during dry summers those differences show up as variations in crop colour and height. When seen from above, these variations can resolve into recognisable shapes: circles, rectangles, the outlines of long-vanished structures. The circular form recorded at Rossestown in a 1973 aerial photograph is consistent with the kind of enclosed settlement that was common across Ireland from the prehistoric period through to the early medieval, though without excavation, a more precise date is impossible to assign.

There is little a visitor could usefully do at the site. The enclosure is not visible at ground level, and its location on gently undulating agricultural land offers no obvious feature to orientate by. Its interest lies less in what can be seen than in the fact of its survival, as a shape in a photograph, an absence in the earth, a place whose existence was unknown until someone looked down at it from a plane fifty years ago.
