Ringfort (Rath), Kilballyherberry, Co. Tipperary

One small puzzle sits at the northern edge of this ringfort in Kilballyherberry: a causeway, roughly four metres wide, crossing what should be the entrance approach, yet there is no corresponding gap in the bank on the other side.

Whoever laid that crossing did so at some point after the original structure was built, and for reasons that no longer announce themselves. The causeway reads as modern, an agricultural convenience grafted onto something far older, and the mismatch gives the site a quietly contradictory character.

A rath, the Irish term for a ringfort of this kind, was typically a circular enclosure defined by an earthen bank and an outer ditch, used during the early medieval period, roughly 500 to 1000 AD, as a farmstead or defended homestead. This example sits on the upper contour of an east-facing slope, now surrounded by improved pasture. The enclosure is roughly circular, measuring about 28 metres east to west and 26 metres north to south. Its defining scarp has been noticeably straightened along the north-east arc, suggesting the line was tidied or altered at some point. The fosse, the defensive ditch that runs from the west-north-west around to the north-east and south-west, is nearly seven metres wide overall, with a depth of just over a metre. Beyond it, an outer bank survives along the south-east to south-west arc, though dense vegetation obscures it to the north-east and east. The interior is level. Two linear field boundaries, modern in character, now enclose the site to the south and west. A second ringfort stands approximately 30 metres to the north-east, which is close enough to suggest the two enclosures were in some way associated, though whether they were contemporary or simply occupying the same favourable ground at different times is not recorded.
