Standing stone, Shevry, Co. Tipperary

On the summit of a natural rise at Shevry, overlooking a valley in North Tipperary, a limestone standing stone marks the entrance to what may be a pond barrow, an ancient monument type characterised by a circular or oval pond-like depression enclosed within an earthen bank, thought to have served a funerary or ritual purpose during the Bronze Age.

The stone is not especially tall, reaching just 1.3 metres, but its proportions are precise enough to suggest intention: rectangular in section, measuring 0.63 metres by 0.34 metres, and oriented on a clear east-west axis. The top tapers to a point, running from west to east, which gives the impression of a directional quality, as though the stone were gesturing toward something.

What makes the arrangement at Shevry particularly interesting is that this stone does not stand alone. A second standing stone has been recorded in the interior of the same barrow, suggesting that the two were part of a considered spatial arrangement rather than isolated monuments. The entrance stone, positioned close to the western edge of the rise where the ground begins to fall away toward the valley, would have been visible from below, its placement on the skyline presumably deliberate. There is a slight hollow around the base, though no packing-stones have been found, leaving open the question of how the stone was originally set and stabilised. The limestone composition is consistent with local geology, but the shaping and orientation point to human choices made a very long time ago, the reasoning for which is no longer recoverable with any certainty.
